Why don’t you mention that the woman sitting on stage with Putin is Samia Suluhu, the illegitimate President of Tanzania?

Just eight months ago, she was oversaw a brutal crackdown in which more than 10,000 Tanzanians were killed, before subsequently claiming victory and retaining power.

She is the first Tanzanian president to visit Russia in over 55 years. This visit is not about diplomacy, but about seeking political protection as international pressure for accountability continues to grow from Western governments and human rights advocates.

Ignoring who she is and why she is there leaves out one of the most important parts of the story.

I have the utmost respect for leaders who recognize the inherent dignity and equal rights of every human being. On behalf of many Tanzanians seeking justice, accountability, religious freedom, and the protection of fundamental human rights, thank you @tedcruz and @SenatorShaheen for your leadership and willingness to listen then acted.

A special thank you to Senator Cruz’s office, for taking the time to engage with us. We are equally grateful to Congressman @RepJoeWilson office for meeting with us and hearing directly from those advocating for justice in Tanzania.

We appreciate the continued attention to Tanzania’s human rights situation, including loss of life, enforced disappearances, abductions, religious repression, restrictions on fundamental freedoms, and the continued imprisonment of Tundu Lissu.

As members of the diaspora, we will continue informing, engaging, and encouraging support for efforts that advance justice, partisan introduced bill, accountability, religious freedom, and human rights. Tanzania needs justice. Tanzania needs accountability. Tanzania needs the release of Tundu Lissu.

When leaders are able to take or retain power through violence and killings against their own citizens and then avoid accountability of any form or under the protection of geopolitical hegemony, it sends a dangerous message to the world. It suggests that human rights violations and abuses of power can be shielded when backed by powerful international alliances. This threatens not only regional stability and regional security, but also humanity as a whole, other nations, and the universal principles of justice, human dignity, and accountability.

Go figure who is in Russia now seeking partners to shield and avoid accountability? The one who claimed victory in the presidency at 98% 🇹🇿, while over 10,000 innocent individuals were killed with bullets on the streets and inside their own homes.

This cannot be allowed; otherwise, dictators will think they can do this and stay in power.

Tanzania needs justice.

Tanganyikans like myself are crying for justice.

Our hope now is the US.

Now that Augustino Lissu has given his blessing to share that he joined us in Washington, DC, I can honestly say that one of the most moving moments of my recent advocacy trip was having him alongside my own son. Both are university students studying political science, being there with us.

Augustino is the son of Tundu Lissu. His father remains in prison in Tanzania after dedicating much of his life to advocating for democracy, justice, the rule of law, free and fair elections, and reforms. This is the same man who survived an assassination attempt in which 16 bullets were removed from his body. One bullet reportedly remains because of its proximity to his spine. 😢

Augustino shared his personal experience with Senate and Congressional offices, speaking not as a politician, but as a son who has grown up in the shadow of violence against his father and the long absences caused by political persecution, exile, and imprisonment. Sadly, family separation is a reality that many Tanzanian families have experienced.

He spoke about missing the simple moments many young people take for granted -a father being present, offering guidance, sharing ordinary childhood experiences.

One statement stayed with me:

“I never really got to play catch with my father because his arm could not fully stretch anymore. All I know is that throughout my father’s adult life, he has fought for what he believed was right, and he has been punished for it.”

To sit in that room and listen to his testimony was deeply emotional. No lens or sunglasses could hide my tears. And with my own son sitting beside me, the weight of that moment became even more personal.

It is painful that Tundu Lissu, after surviving violence and dedicating his life to public service and advocacy, remains in custody amid ongoing concerns about his health and access to appropriate medical care & missing health checkups.

Whether one agrees with him politically or not, every human being deserves due process, dignity, and justice.

How can this be normalized? How can this continue without accountability?

What exactly is his wrongdoing other than advocating for the principles he believes in?

We continue to call for the release of Tundu Lissu and for justice for all those who remain detained, disappeared, persecuted, or targeted for speaking their truth.

Release Tundu Lissu. Deliver justice.
