An ICU doctor in Kurnool bought a Rs 50 lakh term policy in 2022. Died of cardiac arrest on night duty in February 2024. At the hospital. While treating patients.
HDFC Life rejected his wife's claim.
Reason: he didn't disclose policies he held with other insurers.
The consumer commission actually read the proposal form. The form asked one clear question, do you have any existing HDFC Life policy?
He answered it. The section about other policies was written in language the court itself called technical and composite. No direct question about other insurers existed anywhere on the form.
There's a legal principle for this: contra proferentem. You wrote the confusing document, the confusion counts against you.
Full Rs 50 lakh ordered. He answered every question they asked. He was rejected for one they didn't.
