They brawled, intimidated, marched, smashed meetings, beat opponents, and made political violence feel like national rebirth. They believed they were the revolution in boots. The Use: Hitler needed them while he was climbing. The SA made fear visible. They turned sidewalks, beer halls, rallies, and elections into contested ground. They brutalized communists, social democrats, Jews, journalists, and anyone else standing between the party and power. Then power arrived, and the mob became a problem. The Turn: Ernst Röhm and the SA wanted a second revolution. They wanted the old army broken, the street fighters rewarded, and the radicals placed at the center of the new Germany. Hitler needed generals, industrialists, conservatives, and order. The men who had helped drag him upward now stood in the way of the regime becoming permanent. So he killed them. In 1934, during the Night of the Long Knives, Röhm and other SA leaders were arrested and executed. The revolution purged its own fists once they were no longer useful. The Lesson: Modern radicals always imagine the street belongs to them because the party praises them while it is weak. They never understand the transaction. Street violence is useful before power is secured and embarrassing after it is won. The regime does not love its brawlers. It uses them to break the door, then shoots them in the hallway.
