Big Beautiful Bill Act repeals #Section174, small businesses can fully expense domestic R&D costs immediately. Startup software companies benefit significantly, but mass layoffs and AI-driven developer productivity gains muted the news. $IGV

The huge and unrecognized impact of #Section174 taxes on small biotech businesses. The fact that this wasn’t a major media focus in 2022-2024 is nuts.
There's been some really great reporting from @CatBaabMuguira on the impact of Section 174 on small businesses, and we should amplify it.
I'm grateful her latest article puts founders & their teams for whom relief has come too late in the spotlight.

Payroll for engineers should not be penalized by the tax code. If you pay an engineer a salary, you should be able to deduct that salary just as you can the salary of a lawyer or accountant.
Seems obvious and yet!
@RepJasonSmith Please don't forget about small R&D businesses who could not expense their salaries between 2022-now (#Section174)
We’re joining @TechCouncils in calling on Congress to restore Section 174. The future of small + mid-sized innovation firms depends on it. Restore immediate R&D expensing! 💼💡

Good news! I just paid an ungodly amount of taxes (due to the inability to immediately deduct R&D expenses) so we can fund another transgender opera!🙄Stop the waste and fix #section174! @elonmusk @realDonaldTrump @DOGE #USAID
@WaysandMeansGOP Allowing small businesses to expense payroll for *all* employees instead of amortizing salaries for engineers would supercharge tech and manufacturing.
It should be Republicans' top priority. You guys forced this tax increase on us and we laid off workers as a result. Fix it.
@PatrickFIanagan @RepJasonSmith How many (mostly American) jobs did TCJA destroy since 2022 because of its epic fail - #Section174?
26 million small businesses are relying on Congress to deliver certainty so they can expand their business and hire employees.
Congress cannot delay delivering tax relief to small businesses.
@RepJasonSmith 14 words: Small. biz. is. dying. due. to. Trumpian. 2017.TCJA. #Section174. taxes. please. fix. this 🧬 🧪 💰
@RepJasonSmith The 2017 law made salaries in research & tech no longer immediately deductible, but with 5-year deferral. No more delays, please fix #Section174 today. 50% tax on complete revenue ruins small businesses since 2022.
@mcuban #Section174 taxes (amortization of R&D expenses) from the Trump 2017 TCJA needs to be fixed. This is the biggest innovation dumpster fire that no one talks about. Small biz going bankrupt; large biz layoffs. See https://t.co/ezuND6KKGm
@SenSanders Because of #Section174 taxes. Cheaper labor = less expenses. Destroying US innovation, separate from H-1B issues.
@SenSanders This could be because tech companies are savaged by #Section174 taxes brought on by the Trump 2017 TCJA. Employee salaries became owner/company income so companies look to cut costs. Crazy tax. No other industry experiences this. Plz help fix Section174 taxes! @SenatorBaldwin
@danieldbunn @TaxFoundation Hope fixing #Section174 taxes is in your recommendations. The disastrous tax code that keeps on taking from innovation/R&D and leading to lay-offs:
https://t.co/ezuND6KKGm
@_tasteink @magmystical2023 @zetalyrae You don't understand. We (employers) want to hire you. But almost every dollar paid to you counts as profit which is taxed (for LLCs/S-corps in high-tax states) at ~50%. This is unique to US tech/research and started in 2022 "thanks" to TCJA. #Section174
@_tasteink I’ve tagged @mcuban in some of my previous posts on #Section174 taxes. Probably not the right “bro” to tag but I’ll keep trying.
Another major issue is why no one besides ~5 scientists/engineers are discussing this #Section174 debacle where employee salaries and common R&D/tech expenses became OWNER/COMPANY INCOME. How are Promega, Epic, ExactSciences coping? @SenatorBaldwin @SenRonJohnson
@Appyg99 Good tips. Also, we're having the wrong policy debate. The tech job market sucks because Section 174 forces firms to amortize engineering payroll, which raises the cost of all engineering labor. It's a recipe for a shrinking pie.
