Is there a middle ground here?

For example, a system where plates are checked against a narrow, warrant-backed or otherwise legally defined hotlist, and non-matching scans are immediately discarded rather than stored.

That seems like a better privacy tradeoff than keeping a plaintext record of ordinary people’s movements alongside suspected criminals for cops to abuse…
