No one should be surprised this is happening - it was pretty clear from the beginning that this is where we'd end up (something I talked about at @smxmuenchen this spring).
What's likely to be next:
1. ChatGPT's outputs will continue to degrade without access to timely, high-quality training data. When you train a model on the internet, it tends to go bad, very quickly.
2. More companies, and (perhaps more importantly) individual experts + authors will follow suit. Losing access to everything from NYT, Bloomberg, WaPo & LA Times will hurt; losing access to hundreds of thousands of individual SMEs that underpin ChatGPT's ability to respond to niche requests, is an existential threat.
3. Perhaps MSFT steps in and assists, but let's not pretend they are going to subsidize ChatGPT's learnings forever.
4. I wouldn't be surprised to see some money-hungry publications pursue a revenue-share or fee-based deal with ChatGPT, where the publisher enables ChatGPT to use their content to train models in exchange for either flat-fee, per-article or per-use based compensation.
5. There's definitely going to be some kind of cottage industry that pops up around LLM training data. Whoever controls it will find themselves quickly amassing outsized influence.
ChatGPT has entered the "Find Out" phase. Let's see if they can survive.
