I came directly from war – a place where every moment demanded survival – to a world that seems oblivious to that reality."

The op-ed critiques the "Pretoria Peace Agreement," signed in November 2022, which the author describes as "a facade, a cruel silence of our pain." The piece recounts atrocities such as mass killings, sexual violence, starvation, and forced displacement, with the writer stating, "We are survivors of betrayal… and the most painful part is that we thought our politicians cared about us."

“Even here in Boston, in safety, I am haunted by these questions,” the author continues, describing how the ongoing suffering of loved ones in Tigray reverberates even from afar. Amidst despair, the author declares, "One thing is certain: our pain will not be forgotten, and our resistance will echo louder than the silence dictated upon us."

The Tigray Interim Administration (#TIRA) has addressed grievances raised by Internally Displaced Persons (#IDPs) during ongoing peaceful protests in Mekelle, which began on January 13 under the theme “Yak’el” (“Enough is Enough”). In a statement, the interim administration acknowledged that “The failure to implement key provisions of the Pretoria Peace Agreement has deepened political instability in the region,” and described the protests as a “constructive effort to bring attention to the urgent situation facing the people of Tigray.”

The protests, organized by Tsilal Western Tigray Civil Society, are still ongoing at Romanat Square in Mekelle. Demonstrators have chanted demands such as “Return us to our homes” and “Living in tents is enough.” Many IDPs continue to endure harsh conditions, with a recent report revealing nearly 300 deaths at the Hintsad center in Shire over the past three months due to hunger, inadequate medical care, and insufficient aid.

Organized by the Tsilal Western Tigray Civil Society, the protest, titled Yak’el (“Enough is Enough”), aims to spotlight the severe challenges faced by IDPs, including hunger, lack of medical care, and inadequate humanitarian aid.

#Tigray President Calls for Protection of Tigrayans in #Sudan Refugee Camps

Tigray Interim Administration President Getachew Reda has called for the protection of Tigrayans in refugee camps in Sudan.

In his official X (formerly Twitter) account, President Getachew stated that "The situation has been further deteriorating very recently. As a home to tens of thousands of refugees from Tigray and also of other parts of Ethiopia, we are particularly concerned that the war theatre is coming dangerously close to refugee camps in eastern Sudan to #Tenedba and #Umrakuba, among others. While the humanitarian situation in those camps has always been dire, the growing proximity of the actual fighting to those areas has made it even more unsettling."

The civil war has made humanitarian work difficult, putting many Tigrayans in the refugee camps at risk. Getachew highlighted that the worsening humanitarian crisis in the camps has been exacerbated as the conflict approaches these areas.

He strongly urged the regional and international community to pressure both armed forces to prevent civilian casualties. Additionally, he called on the Ethiopian government to take measures to alleviate the suffering of its citizens in Sudan.
