There were places in the world commemorating those times when wizards hadn’t been quite as clever as that, and on many of them the grass would never grow again. (2/2) Terry Pratchett.
@AstroPurva@astroswalker@MingSun_astro @UAHscience @UAHuntsville Great news! Hope you’ll be applying for a CfA/Clay postdoc if you don’t already have a position - announcement should be out very soon now!
Liftoff! 🚀
Congratulations to the XRISM teams at @JAXA_en, @NASAUniverse, and @ESA on a successful launch!
This new X-ray observatory will help us study exploding stars, black holes, and more.

@ClickToZoom@airandspace@chandraxray It’s about 11,000 light years away; the light of the explosion arrived here about 300 years ago (nobody on Earth noticed it, probably because it’s behind a lot of gas and dust and wasn’t all that bright to the naked eye.)
@airandspace@chandraxray Notice the little dot near the center? That’s the remnant neutron star left over from the explosion. We couldn’t see it until Chandra took this image - it’s wildly hot - millions of degrees - but is only about 20miles in diameter, so hard to see!
On this day in 1999, @chandraxray released its "First Light" image of Cassiopeia A. Cas A is the remnant of a star that collapsed about 300 years ago and is 10 light years wide. The X-ray image shows an expanding shell of hot gas from the supernova remnant.
If Eisenhower came back from the dead, he might say, “You fuckers can’t possibly be Republicans.” And he might follow that up with, “We hanged people like you at Nuremberg.”
