I was very interested to hear about how Roger and his team at ETH Zurich started the collaborative work with @solana folks on Alpenglow. What Roger told me is a display of how one can positively take the feedback and improve upon the product.
Here is what @TheWattenhofer narrated:
"...we found something that we thought was bit wrong with Solana back then. The Solana founder himself (@toly) contacted Kobi (@DiscoKobi) and they talked about the problem. They sort of knew the problem as described in the paper and had some bug fixes. But the founder was very open to talk to us and discussed the protocol. Eventually we got some homework from them to show then that we are worthy. And eventually they hired us."
For those interested, the paper that Roger is referring to is this one: https://t.co/OKJZGjpSRJ
Listen to 2:06 - 3:00 from the episode to know the lore more.
IMO, this is a display of a positive attitude on how to handle constructive feedback on your product. Kudos to Toly and Solana community on that.
My question to the guests from @anza_xyz were whether MEV situation in @solana becomes better or worse with Alpenglow. My contention was that with extremely low latency, only sophisticated Solana validators will be able to do MEV extraction.
@DiscoKobi had the following counterpoints to my argument:
> First being Alpenglow equalizes the latency between validators. Alpenglow is expected to improve the latency more for "remote validators" than for those already in a "center of the universe" location.
> Second being related to TowerBFT and "nuanced misbehaviors" that can be currently employed to take advantage of other validators to extract MEV. It was easier to execute these attacks if a validator was better connected, like being "in the center of the universe". Alpenglow is said to address some of these problems.
Listen to the full episode for details.
With Alpenglow, there will be no onchain voting anymore for achieving consensus. This removes the cost of including votes into blocks.
However, in order to avoid abrupt change in economics for the validators and maintain same equilibrium, there is an ongoing discussion for this @solana upgrade to have a small form of incentive (like a tax) where the validators will have to pay to be part of the system next epoch.
When determining the set of validators for the new epoch, the fee is deducted, and if a validator cannot pay the fee, they are not included in the next set of validators.
Here is the writeup: https://t.co/pIEMNjmOFH
Listen to the full episode for more details on Alpenglow!
Alpenglow features a simultaneous fast path and slow path protocol for the consensus.
In short, a validator collects votes, and as soon as 60% "yes" votes are received, the validator sends out a second-round message. The validator continues collecting votes for the first round. Finalization at a validator occurs when either are met:
> The first round of votes reaches 80%.
> The second round of votes reaches 60%.
The faster of these two paths leads to finalization. It is possible that 80% is faster for one validator in @solana , while two times 60% is faster for another. Despite the different speeds to finalization in different validators, the nice thing is protocol remains safe.
Readers might remember this pattern of simultaneous fast path and slow path protocol is something @kartik1507 explained back in episode 1. You can refer to following cheatsheet for details: https://t.co/SsGzZ5Kz9R
STEAL THESE: 46 AI agent and app ideas to vibecode on @eigencloud
Win $10k coding this weekend, I’ll personally jam with anyone who ships
Full thread with ideas 🧵🫳
Agents feel like an OS-level change because they turn software from tools you operate into systems that operate.
As soon as agents serve many users or other agents, reliability becomes a property you have to prove, not assume, what code ran, what data was used, how upgrades happen, what state exists and what stayed private.
That’s the practical definition of agent identity.
Excited to kickoff the Open Innovation Challenge to accelerate verifiable + sovereign agents on EigenCloud.
@sreeramkannan is committing $10k to the best build and compute credits to top 5 agents.

Multiplayer agents need trust, not vibes!
Prove the agent ran this code, used this data, upgraded only this way and kept state private.
Build a verifiable or sovereign agent using EigenCompute.
@sreeramkannan is committing $10,000 to the best verifiable/sovereign agent shipped by Feb 20 + EigenCompute credits for top 5.
