I estimate that, as of this week, 6 million of the 19.3 million #bitcoin mined have been irretrievably lost. (See related research at https://t.co/QMDa6tMh7v ) This means 13.3 million remain with only 1.7 million left to be mined over the next 100+ years. In that time, it's almost certain that another million will be lost, and old coins are being lost as new coins are being created. The 13 million circulating now is probably all you will have access to in your lifetime.

UL is a globally recognized safety certification company that tests and certifies products for safety and performance.

One of the darkest moments in Bitcoin’s early history

June 2011:

- a single user loses everything overnight
- 25,000 BTC disappear
- around $500,000 at the time
- over $2.4 billion at today’s prices

the victim:

a Bitcointalk user known as “Allinvain” one of the earliest miners in Bitcoin

the theft happens on June 13, 2011
12:52 EST

the main transaction:

- hundreds of UTXOs consolidated
- the entire wallet drained at once

destination address:

1KPTdMb6p7H3YCwsyFqrEmKGmsHqe1Q3jg

how it happened:

- Slush Pool account was compromised
- no 2FA
- payout address changed
- credentials already leaked

then the real mistake:

- wallet.dat stored unencrypted
- running on Windows
- mining software from multiple sources

the private keys were literally copied

and when the transaction hit the chain 25,000 BTC moved in seconds

hours later, the post appears on Bitcointalk

allinvain wakes up
his balance is zero

what followed:

- more BTC sent to the same address
- total received: 25,033 BTC
- funds slowly split and moved

today:

- almost everything spent
- only 0.004 BTC remains

the attacker was never found

Blockchain remembers everything

@YungGucciT @HustleBitch_ The scammers send the victim their (scammers) bitcoin wallet recieving address and convince the victim that it's the victim's address, or "investment account" or whatever.

Then the victim buys the bitcoin using physical cash or credit through the BTC ATM and scammer gets the BTC

A blockchain would just add complexity and cost and for what purpose?

A centralized database doesn't need to be replicated to individual users. No need for a blockchain!
