The conversations following the 2026 @APPNA Convention in Orlando have highlighted concerns shared by many in the Pakistani American community. The controversy surrounding the defacement of a Pakistani national icon has understandably generated strong emotions and sparked important discussions.

But our responsibility cannot end with comments on X, WhatsApp, or Facebook.

As Pakistani Americans, we have the privilege of living in a democracy where our voices matter. We also have a responsibility to advocate for those whose voices have been silenced and whose fundamental rights and civil liberties continue to be deliberately disregarded.

While in Orlando, @PAKPAC had the opportunity to host Florida @RepMaxwellFrost to discuss the importance of protecting human rights, restoring democratic institutions, safeguarding civil liberties, and supporting policies that benefit the people of Pakistan. For these reasons, Congressman @MaxwellFrostFL is a co-sponsor of HR 5271, (94 bipartisan co-sponsors).

Currently, @USAID to Pakistan is channeled through organizations with little history and low impact in Pakistan. Unfortunately, the AID we send goes unrecognized by the public and rarely makes it to the people it intended to benefit.

PAKPAC met with Congressmembers at Capitol Hill to address this issue and provided policy recommendations to ensure that USAID supports US registered NGOs with a proven track record of success such as The Citizens Foundation (@TCFPak), Human Development Foundation (@HDFpk), Shaukat Khanum Hospital @SKMCH, Indus Hospital (@indus_of), Development in Literacy (@SupportDIL), and Childlife Foundation (@ChildLifePak).

Partnerships with US registered NGOs will enhance transparency, accountability, and build stronger connections with the people it was intended to help.

The Pakistani American Public Affairs Committee (PAKPAC) is deeply concerned by reports of violence, loss of civilian life, and escalating unrest in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Recent events, including allegations of security forces using excessive force against demonstrators and the growing tensions surrounding ongoing protests, underscore the urgent need for restraint, accountability, and respect for fundamental human rights.

Every government has a fundamental responsibility to protect its citizens, safeguard peaceful assembly, and ensure that grievances are addressed through dialogue rather than force.

The use of lethal force against civilians must be subject to transparent investigation, and those responsible for any violations of human rights must be held accountable.

The people of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan deserve to have their voices heard and their concerns addressed through democratic means. Lasting stability can only be achieved through respect for civil liberties, political inclusion, and meaningful engagement with local communities.

PAKPAC calls upon the @GovtofPakistan to take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions, protect civilian lives, uphold the rule of law, and engage constructively with community leaders and stakeholders. The rights, dignity, and safety of all citizens must remain paramount during this challenging time.

We stand in solidarity with all those seeking peaceful, democratic solutions and reaffirm that the protection of human rights and civil liberties is essential for a just and prosperous future for all.
