The hard part is not defining a unified API. We had a decade of fintech companies who tried and failed to do that.

The hard part is getting all of the stakeholders involved—banks, PSPs, merchants, payment networks, etc—to trust one another enough to adopt a single standard.

That’s why blockchains are necessary. Competing parties now don’t have to trust each other. The infrastructure they’re building on is decentralized and therefore credibly neutral.
