I disagree completely. The fight we’re having is about not about whether society values science as a concept, it’s about whether society values science as it currently exists as an enterprise. And the way to demonstrate that is not to circle the wagons but to show that we are aware of our flaws and are ready to fix them.

@AdrianoAguzzi@BjarkeJensen4 I know. Indeed, some people would not like to work with you if you were to tell them you won't pay for high APCs, but publishing a paper with you as last author is probably more valuable in itself than publishing in a glam journal. There wouldn't be any sacrifice.
@AdrianoAguzzi@BjarkeJensen4 Thanks! I basically try to convince people that the current publishing system is unlikely to change if we continue to try to publish in Nature despite their APCs. I am committed not to try (as first or last author). I am a senior postdoc, so no alumni yet.
@AdrianoAguzzi@BjarkeJensen4 Although I am sure this is an honest excuse, you could very well tell your students and postdocs, prior to hiring them, that you are no longer paying for these exagerated APCs. You'd still have a great team, I'm sure, and could contribute to change from your valuable position.
