For background, caloric restriction has been shown repeatedly in lower organisms, like fruit flies and worms to extend lifespan.

In mammals, the effects tend to be smaller in terms of lifespan; however, can still be sizable with respect to healthspan, which one could argue is at least equally important.

But the cascade of mechanisms linking caloric restriction to lifespan and healthspan has remained murky.

🚨And we need to consider serious tradeoffs in humans...

In particular, low-calorie diets can lead to muscle loss and frailty, which is a serious problem.

Overall, though:

1) The rigorous analysis sticks to what is randomized. Adherence isn't randomized. The solid randomized finding is that CVD benefit gets lost over time and turn into an increased cancer risk.

2) Even in the highest adherence group there is 3x the cancer in the seed oil group. There is overall 3x the cancer in the >10%, so it's clearly not isolated to the low adherence.

3) If you were to posit it's all due to low adherence you are left with a really weird trend: why did it take years for the cancer trend *difference* between the groups to emerge and why did it keep separating over time if this is a result of randomness?

Randomness on average favors null effects and not clear time dependent trends.

The data overall look far too "logical" to be random.

The best explanation is that as vitamin E status declined and tissue PUFA saturation maxed out, lipid peroxidation drove an increase in cancer risk, with some portion of the adherence difference due to cancer decreasing food intake.

.@naval: There was a story that I read about @elonmusk that really affected me, which was when he was talking to Bill Gates, and Bill Gates had just taken out some huge short on Tesla. It was like a billion dollar short or something.

And, Elon was like, “Why would you do that? Why would you short Tesla?” And Bill goes, “Well, you know, I talked to my financial advisors and I looked at the math and there’s no way it’s overvalued. And so I’m going to make money on the short.”

And Elon goes, “What do you care about making money? I thought you were into electric cars and climate change and saving the world. What are you doing trying to save a few bucks and betting against Tesla?”. And he just walked away in disgust.

And I think he never talked to Bill Gates after that. And that’s when I realized, like, Elon’s a purist. He means what he says. The money is a tool for him to get what he’s trying to do. And so I take him at face value, which is the crazy thing, because a lot of people who set these audacious goals to inspire people, you kind of know they don’t really mean it.

Elon, I take at face value. So I really do think he intends to get to Mars. I don’t think he’s joking about that. And I think he means to get there within a defined window of time. And I don’t think it’s just like an inspirational, faraway goal. I think he’s very, very concretely going to do whatever it takes.

Because Elon doesn’t want to go down in history as the electric car guy or even the guy who saved America guy. He wants to go down as a guy who got humanity to the stars. Again, I’ll give him more credit than that. I don’t even think he wants to go down as the “I got humanity to the stars” guy.

He’s just like, “I want to get to the stars, and so I have to make it happen in this lifetime. The only way that I get to experience the science fiction world in my head is if I get to the stars.” And so that’s so inspirational. I think that drives everything.

So I think the government was just a thing that got in his way.

NEW: San Francisco lawyer Harmeet Dhillon shares that Harris began her political career by breaking the law. According to Dhillon, Harris won her district attorney race by violating campaign finance laws and benefiting from corrupt patronage.

In 2003, during her campaign for district attorney, Kamala Harris, along with other candidates, agreed to a campaign finance cap of $211,000 under a matching funds program. However, when she fell behind in the race, she significantly increased her campaign spending. An ethics complaint filed against her revealed that her expenditures exceeded $600,000.

Despite violating campaign finance laws, Harris reportedly avoided repercussions because the San Francisco Ethics Commission, whose members were allegedly tied to her former lover Willie Brown, chose to overlook the violation.

Additionally, while campaigning, Kamala Harris raised funds by soliciting donations from slumlords she was supposed to be regulating in her role at the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office, where she worked on behalf of tenants receiving public assistance.
