For years, we have been forced to witness the brutal killings of innocent civilians, mostly Amharas, who have lived and raised families in Arsi for generations.
These atrocities are often blamed on Oromo extremist armed groups, such as the OLA and Shene, yet neither of these groups has ever publicly claimed responsibility. Despite the repeated nature of these attacks, the government routinely dismisses them without issuing any official statements, expressions of condolence, or explanations of what has taken place.
The Abiy Ahmed regime, which reportedly formed and deployed an assassination squad known as โkore Negegnaโin the early months of its rule, has been widely implicated in the killings of ethnic Amharasโboth by using its own covert units and by collaborating with armed Oromo extremist militias.
The clearest evidence of the regimeโs culpability in these crimes against humanity is its consistent silence and inaction. Over the past seven years, every time these massacres have occurred- often claiming the lives of ten or more people at once - the government has never made any public effort to address the atrocities. It has neither issued press statements nor strengthened local security forces to protect civilians. This ongoing neglect strongly suggests a deliberate policy of indifference or even complicity toward the suffering of Amhara communities in Arsi and beyond.
