The #EuropeanUnion’s continued cooperation with Rwanda, despite Rwanda’s invasion of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), raises serious concerns about its engagement with a government accused of responsibility for the killing of Congolese civilians since 1996 under the leadership of dictator @PaulKagame .

We call on the #EuropeanUnion to impose targeted sanctions on the Government of Rwanda and its President, Paul Kagame, and to take all appropriate measures to promote accountability, justice, and lasting peace in the #GreatLakesregion .

Dear Madam @AkalizaUwase ,
Having read your comments, I believe you are either demonstrating ignorance or that you are a die-hard fanatic. Never forget that fanaticism fuels divisions and undermines social cohesion, making peaceful coexistence difficult.

Fanaticism can lead to extreme violence, such as acts of terrorism (Reba ibihano byose bimaze gutangwa ariko akanga akinangira = Kwiyahura) or collective violence, and I sense in your comments a willingness to take action should your @PaulKagame ever fall from power. You should appeal to your conscience and wisdom rather than to emotions fuelled by the past.

Indeed, one does not place one’s trust in a bloodthirsty man, but rather in men endowed with a sense of democracy and a commitment to the common good. A dictatorship must be opposed.

The mistake that was made was to entrust power to a man who has been wounded, yet is driven by a thirst for power and revenge. That is why we find ourselves in this situation today.

Kagame’s RPF must agree to open up the political arena and allow for a multi-party system and democratic pluralism. But do you think, Madam, that this is possible with a dictator like Kagame? AHA NIHO RUZINGIYE 🤔.

Today is the last day of the deadline that the #UnitedStates gave to dictator #Kagame for Rwandan troops to withdraw from the territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, the Rwandan government has not complied with it.

What should we expect in the coming hours or days? Will the United States impose further sanctions, or will there be other measures, including actions under international law?

It is important to remember that since 1996, President #PaulKagame and the Rwandan military @RwandaMoD have killed more than 20 million Congolese and Rwandan refugees in the wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo. That is why we continue to demand justice for the people of Congo.

The new Aston Villa–Visit Rwanda partnership is another example of sportswashing: using football to polish a country’s image while serious human rights concerns remain unresolved.

Louise Mushikiwabo ne doit pas briguer un troisième mandat à la tête de l’@OIFrancophonie.

La Déclaration de Bamako engage la Francophonie à défendre la démocratie, l’État de droit, les droits humains et les libertés fondamentales, sans géométrie variable.

Après deux mandats, l’OIF a besoin d’un nouveau souffle.

Ancienne ministre des Affaires étrangères du #Rwanda, @LMushikiwabo reste étroitement associée au régime criminel de @PaulKagame. Face aux accusations internationales visant la collaboration du Rwanda avec le M23 et aux graves violations documentées dans l’Est de la #RDC, son absence de condamnation claire fragilise la crédibilité de l’OIF.

Sa candidature à un troisième mandat est devenue un facteur de division au sein même de la Francophonie. Une organisation appelée à rassembler ne peut être dirigée durablement par une personnalité dont le maintien suscite une telle défiance.

Cette crise de confiance a aussi des conséquences concrètes. Le budget 2025 de l’OIF fait apparaître une grande baisse des contributions volontaires, liée notamment à des montants du Canada et de la Suisse non confirmés. Ce signal financier, ajouté aux tensions diplomatiques avec la RDC, montre qu’un leadership clivant peut fragiliser toute l’institution.

La RDC, premier pays francophone du monde, mérite une OIF fidèle à la Déclaration de Bamako, indépendante dans ses prises de position et capable de condamner clairement toute violation du droit international.

Pour préserver son autorité morale, sa crédibilité et la confiance des États membres, l’OIF doit tourner la page et choisir un leadership nouveau, indépendant et rassembleur.

Journalists, activists, musicians, YouTubers, and opposition figures have been imprisoned, disappeared, forced into exile, or silenced. As @Smith_JeffreyT explained, opposition leaders like @VictoireUmuhoza are feared not because they threaten Rwanda's security, but because they challenge the regime's monopoly on power and offer peaceful democratic alternatives.

#Rwanda: If this document is authentic and is being enforced, it is deeply concerning!!!

Why would the @RwandaGov require families organizing private gatherings of more than 20 people to purchase food from hotels, motels, or restaurants instead of preparing it themselves?

Not every household can afford catering services. Rwanda's culture is rooted in Ubuntu and community solidarity. People gather in their homes to pray, celebrate weddings and baptisms, mourn loved ones, support one another, and strengthen family and community bonds. Public policy should not make these traditions more difficult or more expensive.

If the objective is to support the hospitality sector, the government should explain this openly and justify why such a measure is necessary. Citizens deserve transparency about the reasons behind policies that affect their daily lives.

At a time when sanctions have been imposed on Rwanda over its role in the conflict in eastern DRC and the carrying out of serious human rights violations; including killings, widespread sexual violence, the recruitment of child soldiers, and the mass displacement of civilians; many reports indicate that Rwanda’s hospitality industry and other sectors are facing economic challenges.

It is therefore reasonable to ask whether this measure is linked to broader economic pressures. If that is the case, the government should be transparent about its rationale rather than imposing additional financial burdens on ordinary families without explanation.

It has been 32 years since the plane carrying Presidents #JuvénalHabyarimana and #CyprienNtaryamira was allegedly shot down by @PaulKagame , yet to this day no one has been held accountable.

The killings committed by the @rpfinkotanyi in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have never been brought to justice. We call upon the #internationalcommunity and the @UN to acknowledge the gravity of these killings, which continue to affect Rwandans and Congolese alike, and to ensure that all those responsible for these atrocities and the shedding of innocent civilians’ blood are held accountable .
