NIGERIA: ON TAX REFORMS AND DOUBLE TAXATION
Tax Reforms:
Come 1st January 2026, over 40 million tax-paying Nigerians are expected to secure a Tax Identification Number (TIN) or risk losing access to bank accounts, the Nigerian Federal Government has declared.
This additional verification burden, with which the government imposes to enforce new tax rules, has raised panic and worry for millions of citizens already in possession of transaction identifications like the Bank Verification Number (BVN) and NIN (National Identification Number).
By its new tax rules, the APC-led Federal Government violates the nation’s 1999 constitution which authorizes no exclusive or concurrent basis to impose Value Added Tax (VAT) on already taxed citizens.
Added to this violation, is the proven criminal level of fiscal irresponsibility by the Tinubu-led government in accounting for taxpayers revenue. For example, five months after President Tinubu declared an excess revenue above its N40.8 Trillion budget, it turned around, this week, to announce a N30Trillion shortfall. Worse still, the government has failed to publish both its 2025 budgetary expenditures and spending from its oil-generated revenue, plunging business and contractors in fiscal limbo.
Electoral Reform:
In over two and half years in power and with an under-average performance in economy, security and foreign policy, many worse-off Nigerians now grapple daily with the shambolic electoral process that hurled Tinubu to power in the first place.
Since reneging on the use of accreditation and transmission systems as enshrined in 2022 Electoral Act, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) continues to cast a prolonged doubt on the credibility of future electoral process in Nigeria. Now a fresh window has opened for INEC’s new chairman,
Prof. Josh Amiputan, to commence implementation of electoral reforms including Bimodal Verification Accreditation System (BVAS), timely collation of results, and speedy resolution of post-election disputes among others. Without such binding reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections, the loopholes that allowed for opacity and manipulation will remain open
On Party Defection:
While INEC is encouraged to work its part, the habit of cross-party defection among politicians must be strongly condemned. Nigeria’s nascent democracy yearns for party politics rooted in definitive ideologies not incessant defections—from opposition parties to the ruling APC—which creates a uniparty crony club betraying the trust of millions of voters.
In recent times, the APC has been accused of commodifying democracy by weaponising billions of alleged taxpayers funds to reward defection. If true, this constitutes a condemnable violation of the Corrupt Practices Act with far-reaching damage to the nation’s political system. It behoves on INEC and the state justice system to preserve and protect the sanctity of the nation’s electoral system by instituting guardrails against incessant and counterproductive defections.
Incessant Checkpoints in South-South and South-East:
As Nigerians journey back to their hometowns to celebrate the Christmas season, perhaps, it is a critical time for Defence Headquarters to make good the widespread enforcement of its orders to dismantle non-essential roadblocks nationwide. The Southeastern region, specifically suffers significant harm as it fields an average of 2000 police and military checkpoints across five states, making it the most checkpointed region in Nigeria, per intersociety reports. In all its major interstate roads—Aba/Enugu, Aba/Port Harcourt, Owerri/Onitsha, Onitsha/Enugu etc—a checkpoint is stationed for every four to six kilometers of road. Last year in December, these roadblocks allegedly raked in over N20 billion from extortion of commercial motorists and private travelers, resulting in illegal double taxation and costing travelers billions more in travel delays.
The Federal Government is encouraged to continue in its fight against corruption, and to reinstate petroleum subsidies as the most equitable distribution of welfare benefits to citizens. It must commit to free and fair upcoming elections and cease the entrenchment of nepotism and religious ethnocentrism in appointment processes.
Finally, the Federal Government as a matter of urgent necessity should fix the major oil refineries in Nigeria such as those of Kaduna, Port-Harcourt and Warri as this will go a long way to contribute to the alleviation of hardship encountered by innocent Nigerians.

EU OVERREACH: BRUSSELS’ €120 MILLION FINE ON ELON MUSK SPARKS TRANSATLANTIC BACKLASH
The European Union has just lit the fuse on a political powder keg by slapping Elon Musk’s X platform with a €120 million fine, proving once again that Brussels prefers punishment over progress, control over innovation, and fear over freedom. “They think they can tell the world what to say and what to think,” Musk said, turning the fine into a rallying cry for free speech.
Musk’s real offense is defiance. X has become a digital battlefield where dissenting voices are heard and establishment narratives are challenged. “This is an attack on free speech, pure and simple,” warned former U.S. Senator JD Vance. The EU cannot tolerate that, so it throws fines like blunt instruments, hoping to intimidate and silence. But heavy-handed bureaucracy rarely works against those who refuse to bow.
Instead of shrinking under pressure, Musk stands tall, exposing Brussels’ obsession with control and inability to adapt to the digital age. “We will not be silenced,” Musk declared, as users rallied behind him across the globe. Every euro of this fine only amplifies his platform and his message, proving that attempts at censorship often backfire spectacularly.
Brexit voters are watching with vindication. “This is exactly why we left,” said one Reform Party supporter. This is the centralized, unaccountable authority they rejected. While Brussels mutters clichés about compliance, the world sees overreach in action: a governing body obsessed with fines, fearful of debate, and blind to innovation. Musk’s defiance highlights the stark contrast between freedom and bureaucracy, progress and regulation, courage and conformity.
Brussels has picked the wrong fight. By targeting Musk, it has awakened a transatlantic backlash, rallied critics, and sparked a global conversation about power, censorship, and accountability. In trying to enforce obedience, the EU has shown its weakness and fueled a revolt that will be remembered far longer than the fine itself. “They underestimated the response,” Musk tweeted, as support poured in from across Europe and the Americas.

N10 BILLION FOR STATE HOUSE SOLAR: SYMBOL OF ELITE EXCESS AND PUBLIC NEGLECT.
The Nigerian Presidency has allocated a shocking N10 billion for a solar power project at the State House — a tone-deaf and excessive move in a nation where millions endure power outages, hunger, and inadequate healthcare. At a time of economic hardship, such spending exposes a glaring disconnect between the ruling elite and the suffering majority.
Yes, Nigeria needs renewable energy. But this isn’t a national energy strategy — it’s a luxury upgrade for the powerful. While communities remain in darkness and small businesses struggle to survive without reliable electricity, this solar project benefits only those already shielded by diesel-powered comfort and government privilege.
Even more troubling is the complete lack of transparency. There is no public breakdown of costs, scope, or implementation. If this project must proceed at all, it should be subject to established public procurement laws, open competitive bidding, and independent oversight to ensure it serves the public interest — not private pockets.
This project illustrates Nigeria’s warped spending priorities. The same government that delays minimum wage negotiations and slashes social services somehow finds billions to power presidential offices. That money could electrify rural hospitals, power schools, or fund solar for underserved communities.
This isn’t governance — it’s elite indulgence. True commitment to renewable energy should start where it’s needed most: in off-grid villages, health centers, and public institutions that impact ordinary lives. Until that happens, solar power at the State House will remain a symbol of mismanagement, not progress.
Nigerians are watching. We are tired of leaders who govern in luxury while preaching sacrifice. This project, like so many before it, must be questioned, audited, and if not scrapped, carried out with full transparency and accountability. Anything less is a betrayal of public trust.

INEC MUST BE REFORMED NOW — OR FORGET FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS IN 2027.
As Nigeria looks toward the 2027 general elections, one truth must be said boldly: without urgent and sweeping reforms to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Nigerians should forget about credible elections. The system is broken — and it cannot be business as usual.
INEC’s performance in recent elections has left millions of Nigerians disillusioned. Promises of electronic transmission of results were abandoned at critical moments. Real-time updates vanished. Collation centers became theaters of confusion, intimidation, and manipulation. The trust deficit is growing, and if nothing is done, 2027 will be rigged in broad daylight — with disastrous consequences for Nigeria’s democracy.
The time to act is now. Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman, is set to leave office this year. This presents a crucial opportunity for the National Assembly and Nigerian citizens to push for lasting electoral reform. Nigerians must demand a new leadership at INEC that is truly independent, courageous, and committed to transparency — not one handpicked to serve the interests of the ruling elite.
Central to these reforms is the real-time collation and transmission of results from polling units using the BVAS (Bimodal Voter Accreditation System). The technology exists. It was introduced to prevent over-voting and manipulation, but political sabotage and weak enforcement turned it into a half-measure. For 2027, Nigerians must insist that all results be uploaded live from the polling unit, accessible to the public, and traceable in real time.
INEC must be stripped of its culture of secrecy. Appointments to its leadership must be depoliticized and subject to rigorous public scrutiny. A robust digital infrastructure must be legally mandated, backed by enforcement mechanisms that criminalize tampering, delay, or obstruction of result uploads. This is non-negotiable.
Nigerians must not accept anything less and must rise, mobilize, and pressure lawmakers to act now, not in 2026. Civil society, the media, and all who care about the future must demand a transparent, reformed INEC, with legal frameworks that guarantee credible polls. The survival of Nigeria's democracy depends on it.

CHRISTIAN GENOCIDE AND ETHNIC CLEANSING IN NIGERIA WHILE CNN, SKY NEWS OBSESS OVER ISRAEL.
Halfway across the world in Nigeria, a full-scale religious persecution is unfolding with barely a whisper from CNN, Sky news etc. Islamist Fulani militants — often downplayed as “herders” in media reports — have been carrying out systematic attacks on Christian communities across states like Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, and Kogi. Entire villages are wiped out, worshippers slaughtered in churches, and farmlands seized. Most recently, during this Easter period, over 50 Christians were brutally killed while gathered for worship in one such unprovoked attack.
Unlike Gaza, Nigeria is not a declared war zone. The Nigerian Christians being murdered in cold blood have launched no rockets, built no tunnels, and issued no threats. They are farmers, worshippers, and school children. Yet their suffering is ignored, minimized, or buried in media silence. Sky News, CNN, UK Prime Minister Steimer, Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Macron and many other Western voices who rush to condemn Israel, say little — if anything — about these atrocities.
Why this silence? Why does the West’s moral compass spin only when the narrative fits certain geopolitical sympathies? It is deeply troubling that the deaths of Christians in Nigeria — often higher in number than those in Gaza — do not merit headlines or human rights outrage. Their blood does not stain the front pages of international newspapers, nor spark debates in the halls of Western parliaments.
This selective concern raises serious ethical questions. The Gaza war, imposed on Israel by Hamas, a proscribed terrorist organization by the UK, US, and EU, has become a symbol of media obsession. Conversely, the war against Christians in Nigeria — a war driven not by state actors, but by jihadist militias bent on religious cleansing — remains shamefully underreported.
This isn’t about minimizing the suffering in Gaza. Every civilian death is a tragedy. But so is the murder of innocent believers in Nigeria, and it is long past time that the international media and political elite acknowledged this reality. The lives of Nigerian Christians are not worth less. Their stories matter. And if the West wishes to maintain any moral authority, it must start treating them as such.
Until then, criticisms of Israel and Netanyahu that ignore this broader context are not only hypocritical — they are complicit in the erasure of an ongoing genocide.

HUNTER BIDEN GUILTY: HOW BIDEN’S CRIMINAL SON CASTS SHADOWS ON REELECTION BID
Hunter Biden, the first son of US President, Joe Biden, was, on Tuesday, found guilty on all three count charges of illegal possession of weapons by a drug addict, lying in relation to addiction, and lying to a federally licensed gun dealer.
The 12-man federal jury delivered an 11-to-1 verdict carrying a sentence of up to 25 years imprisonment depending on the judge's decision over the next four months.
Amongst a long list of alleged offenses, Hunter who was a cocaine addict in 2018, had lied about his addiction problems in documents necessary for gun purchase at his home town in Wilmington, Delaware. Hunter, who defied Congressional subpoena in December following investigations into Joe Biden’s alleged corrupt dealings with Ukraine and China, appeared indifferent as his verdict was read in the final hours of the week-long trial.
Being a first time offender, it is unlikely that Hunter Biden will go to jail. However, the combination of this verdict and the likely outcome of another tax evasion charge this September in Los Angeles, will have a devastating blow on Joe Biden who has, for over the last two decades, held his first son as a right hand man for business dealings.
In reaction to the verdict, congress Democrats have attempted to signal the conviction as another proof of the fairness of the justice system in subtle reference to Republicans who described Trump’s conviction as unjust. This, however, fails to ignore the sharp contrast in both cases where the statute of limitation was hastily overturned in Trump’s case, key witnesses for the defendant denied testimony, and a Trump-hating convicted felon called upon to discredit Trump— all while slapping multiple fines and a gag order on the leading presidential candidate.
Hunter Biden on the other hand, made a personal, and frankly incriminating, choice to smoke cocaine in public and lied about it to illegally purchase a gun.
Beyond the trial, Hunter’s case highlights the growing addiction problems facing millions of families in the US. One which the Bden administration has worsened with an open border policy.
In the run up to the polls, Americans remain keen to observe whether the president will save his son from likely jail time or respect the rule of law as has been repeatedly claimed.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: THE TRUE LEADER THE WORLD NEEDS NOW
A critical review of the state, status and position of the United States of America under Joe Biden's presidency depicts collosal failure, total economic degradation and potential destruction of the nation. Several indices of growth measurement nosedived under Biden's administration, bringing economic crisis, high inflation and hardship to Americans.
As a result of his gross incompetence, inflation rose from 1.4% in January 2021 to 3.36% in April 2024, a sharp contrast with President Trump's administration. The high inflation is coupled with high energy cost, open border crisis with estimated 15 million illegal immigrants invading the nation. The disastrous and disgraceful withdrawal of America in Afghanistan with 16 American soldiers dead continues as heartbreak to the families of the fallen soldiers and Americans in general.
The unconditional support of Joe Biden and democrats for total abortion up to the nineth month is a travesty and questions the morality and human conscience in them. Above all, America has lost the trust and confidence of their allies due to Biden's cruel treatments and dispositions, a relationship built over decades by the founding fathers. In the annals of history, America stands firm with Israel but that has been marred by Biden's personal selfish political interest. The Russia-Ukraine war, Israel-Hamas war, Youthis-South China sea face-off, including crisis in Sudan, Niger, Mali etc, all traces to Biden's global mal-administration and negligence.
In contrast, President Trump despite unprecedented with-hunt and persecutions by Democrats throughout his 4years in the White House, delivered on his promises, fostered massive economic growth for the American people on various spheres which includes biggest package of tax cuts in history, restored America's manufacturing jobs, rebuilt the military, built Southern border walls, great job numbers for all Americans including Blacks and Hispanics, withdrew U.S from job-killing Paris Climate Accord, disastrous Iran nuclear deal, recognised Jerusalem as the eternal capital of Israel including the Golan Heights, strong immigration policies, secured southern border, etc.
President Trump in addition succeeded in keeping China, Russia, North Korea, E.U and other nations under effective check, thus maintaining global peace. It is worthy to unconditionally state that Biden has lost touch with reality and should not be allowed for another four years in office as that could be detrimental to the prosperity of America and World peace. All genuine and true Americans must rise up and defend their country by ensuring the election of a true leader on November 5th 2024 whose sole interest is simply to restore the greatness of America and global peace.

WON’T BE MISSED: IRANIANS REACT TO PRESIDENT EBRAHIM RAISI’S DEMISE.
Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisolsadati has been confirmed dead after helicopter wreckage was found this morning in the Dizmar forest, a mountainous region between Azerbaijan and Iran. Hundreds of rescue teams combed the foggy mountains all night in a 14-hour-long search for the 63-year-old who met his demise on a Sunday trip to inspect a dam construction project in the border region.
Raisi, who is survived by wife, Jamileh and two children, ascended to the top government position three years ago, in an election marked by outrageous rigging and low voter turnout—much to the dictates of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the ultra-extremist supreme leader of Iran.
A Holocaust denier, perpetrator of mass opposition murders, and a propagator for the annihilation of the State of Israel, the former Chief Justice flooded his cabinet with Sharia-devotees and antisemitic extremists in his short reign as President oversaw the most right wing government characterized by corruption, helicopter-high inflation, unemployment and outright censorship. Raisi repeatedly enriched uranium in total defiance of the Iranian deal, and funded a hydra-headed network of Islamist terrorist proxies with oil sale proceeds thus solidifying the country’s stance as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism especially in the light of its role as a supplier of weapons, funds and military training for the deadly October 7th 2023 attack on Israel by Gaza terrorist group, Hamas.
His death means millions of Iranians may have a flickering hope of pushback from a legitimized terrorist government with a fresh election due in 50 days, especially since the West has failed them and the UN continues to celebrate blatant human rights abuse and violent suppression of women’s rights by the regime.
60% of Iranians want a regime change. A section of reactions on X social media platform show thousands of Iranians celebrating across Europe and the US in defiance of the IRGC censorship, persecution. Over 60,000 Iranians stood behind Israel following Tehran’s April 14th attack on Israel.
Now with a growing population of Iranian Christians now surpassing one million, many believe a widespread rejection of Islamic extremism and its attendant religiously motivated terrorism is imminent in the Persian nation.
“The Butcher of Tehran won't be missed” an X user posted; “Iranians want their oppressive leaders gone one way or the other.”
Raisi will be replaced on the interim by his vice president, Mohammed Mokhber, a nuclear arms peddler, a Kremlin stooge and the head of Setad—an investment fund built upon thousands of stolen Iranian properties from the 1979 Islamic revolution. Iran decides in 50 days.

ICC NETANYAHU ARREST: OUTRAGEOUS AND UTTERLY CONDEMNABLE
The arrest warrant request by International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor, Karim Khan, against Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu represents another systematically perpetrated outrageous hatred and bias for the nation of Israel.
The IDF has upheld till date, its reputation as one of the worlds most moral, compassionate and professional army in the fight against murderous, rapists and terrorists who hold holocaust fantasy and an unsanctioned allegiance to Nazism.
Through its use of roof knockers, precision weapons, clear communication channels, standard civilian evacuation procedures, the set-up of an active military disciplinary committee, and permission grants for essential human aid to the people of Gaza, Israel has continued to demonstrate its clear intent to destroy only Hamas and its hydra-headed terror network.
On the contrary, Hamas has constantly violated all international humanitarian laws by raping, torturing, and murdering over 1200 Israeli civilians in the unprovoked October 7th terrorist attack. It has refused to release kidnapped hostages held for over six months despite several calls by the UN, and continues to launch rockets from civilian enclaves, confiscate food and water aid for impoverished Gazans, and weaponise weak and defenseless Gaza and Rafah residents as human shields.
Equating Israel’s democratic right to self-defense with the brutal and barbaric acts of Islamic terrorists is an outrageous misrepresentation of justice deserving outright condemnation by global world leaders.
Judge Karim Khan and the ICC must be called to order against transmogrifying the purpose of the court to become an antithetical clog in the wheel of justice and an arbiter for terrorists.
Israel holds an eternal, indivisible and non-negotiable right to self defense.

FG PLANS TO BORROW N20 TRILLION FROM PENSION FUND TO FINANCE INFRASTRUCTURE IN NIGERIA.
Recently, there has been news about the Federal Government's plan to borrow a staggering N20 trillion from the Pension Fund to finance infrastructure in Nigeria.
As responsible citizens, this decision should be opposed. The pension fund is the hard-earned money of Nigerian workers, saved for their retirement. Using it for infrastructure projects is not only illegal but also puts the financial security of these workers at risk.
The government should explore other sources of funding for infrastructure development, rather than relying on the pension fund, which is meant to provide a safety net for retirees.
Nigerians, civil society organizations and the National Assembly should join in condemning this move and take necessary steps to stop it. The government must prioritize the well-being of its citizens and ensure that their hard-earned money is protected.
