As the Joint Oversight Committee welcomes new commitments to peace and expresses concern over drone strikes on civilians and the worsening humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

While agreements are being signed to give the Banyamulenge and other civilians in Minembwe a chance to live in peace and dignity, violence continues unabated.

According to local sources, FARDC, together with Burundian forces, FDLR, and Wazalendo militias, continue attacks on Banyamulenge villages. Hospitals and civilian infrastructure have reportedly been damaged, and lifesaving medications stored in medical facilities destroyed—leaving mothers, newborn babies, the elderly, and the wounded without the care they desperately need.

Peace is not achieved through signatures alone. It is achieved when bombs stop falling, hospitals are protected, humanitarian aid reaches those in need, and civilians can live without fear.

The people of Minembwe are pleading for urgent humanitarian assistance and meaningful protection. The international community must ensure that the commitments made at the negotiating table are reflected in the lives of those trapped by the violence. Lives cannot wait.

🚨 URGENT HUMANITARIAN APPEAL FOR MINEMBWE 🚨

Today, the reality of Banyamulenge families returning to their villages of Karingi, Bidegu, Ilundu, Karongi, and Gakenke Kwa Muhindanyi, recently occupied by the coalition of the D.R.Congo, Burundian armies, Wazalendo militias, and the FDLR, are finding their communities devastated.

Homes, Churches have been destroyed, crops ravaged, and livestock decimated.

With health centers destroyed and medical supplies exhausted, thousands of civilians are left without shelter, food, or access to lifesaving care.

If urgent assistance is not provided, there is a serious risk of famine, starvation, and outbreaks of disease among the affected population.

It is time for humanitarian organizations to uphold the principles of humanity and impartiality and demonstrate that aid does not discriminate and that Banyamulenge lives matter equally.

According to local sources and the latest humanitarian alert issued by the Umoja Network Platform, ongoing drone attacks, heavy shelling, and escalating fighting around Minembwe, South Kivu, continue to endanger the Banyamulenge civilian population.
Clashes have intensified in Gakenke, Kalingi, Ilundu, and Gitavi. Thousands of women, children, elderly persons, and displaced families are living in fear amid continuous explosions and drone activity.

🚨 UMOJA NETWORK - HUMANITARIAN ALERT FROM MINEMBWE 🚨

THIS IS A DESPERATE CRY FOR HELP. Innocent families are trapped in terror as violence spirals out of control, and entire communities are being pushed to the brink of catastrophe. Every hour without action means more lives shattered, more children traumatized, and more families left with nothing. The world cannot afford to look away.

The UMOJA Network, representing 23 local NGOs, reports a worsening humanitarian crisis in Minembwe and surrounding areas of South Kivu.

Between May 15 and 28, villages including Kalingi, Bidegu, Ilundu, Karongi, and Gakenke faced repeated attacks involving drones and heavy fighting. Homes, farms, schools, and health facilities were destroyed, leaving civilians devastated.

Children, women, and families are among the victims. The destruction of the Kalingi Health Centre, blocked humanitarian access, damage to the Minembwe airstrip, and communication blackouts have left communities isolated.

MPA urgently calls on the international community and humanitarian organizations to protect civilians, restore aid access, and help stop the violence in eastern DRC.

The drone strike in Mushaki constitutes a grave violation of International Humanitarian Law and raises serious concerns regarding the conduct of the Congolese government. Located approximately 20 miles from Goma and far removed from active frontlines, Mushaki was not an immediate zone of military engagement. The attack resulted in the deaths of 22 civilians and left hundreds more injured, prompting urgent questions about the intentions and strategic objectives behind Kinshasa’s actions.
Such conduct reflects a disturbing level of irresponsibility and recklessness that warrants unequivocal international condemnation, alongside calls for accountability on the part of President Félix Tshisekedi. Following the events of March 11, including the killing of a United Nations staff member in Goma by a drone strike, as well as the continuing drone attacks reported in Minembwe and Masisi, there is growing concern over an escalating pattern of violence against civilians and non-combatants.
In light of these developments, the United States and the broader international community should adopt a clear and unambiguous position in condemning these actions before the situation deteriorates further. No political or economic considerations, including ongoing mineral agreements with the United States, should place any government or leader above the rule of law and established international norms.
We therefore call upon the United States, in its leadership role within this conflict, to uphold higher moral and ethical standards in responding to these violations and in promoting accountability, civilian protection, and adherence to international law.

For the last two days Minembwe is under relentless attacks from the Congo government coalition forces. This is happening while we (AFC) are withdrawing as a sign of good faith to give chance to peace talks. This conflict continues to expose the challenges of the mediation and the importance of impartial diplomacy. As the United States calls on AFC forces to withdraw from liberated areas, questions are increasingly being raised about whether equal pressure is being applied to all actors involved in the conflict.
These attacks on Minembwe by the government have fueled concerns of a one-sided mediation. Peace cannot be achieved if international actors condemn one side while remaining silent when the other side escalates military operations.

Successful mediation depends on credibility. A mediator must be seen as neutral, fair, and committed to holding all parties accountable under the same standards. When pressure is selectively applied, trust erodes, and parties become less willing to engage sincerely in dialogue. This perception of double standards can deepen divisions and prolong instability rather than encourage compromise.
The people of eastern Congo have suffered decades of violence, displacement, and insecurity. What they need now is a balanced peace process that prioritizes civilian protection and addresses the actions of every armed actor equally. If the United States wishes to play a constructive role in resolving the crisis, it must demonstrate consistency in its approach and condemn violations regardless of who commits them.

Impartiality is not weakness in mediation — it is the foundation of trust. Without it, even well-intentioned diplomatic efforts risk losing legitimacy in the eyes of those most affected by the conflict.

Denouncing Discriminatory and Dangerous Remarks by Steve Mbikayi

Mahoro Peace Association expresses its strongest indignation regarding the statements made by Mr. Steve Mbikayi(@Cartesien243 ), Member of DRC Parliament, during his interview on the Kinshasa Television RDC YouTube channel, hosted by Mr. Marius Muhunga, titled: “Washington, Constitution, war: Steve Mbikayi says what many dare not say.”
Mr. Mbikayi questions the Congolese nationality of members of our association, systematically labels them as “Rwandans,” and claims it is difficult to distinguish a Munyamulenge from a Rwandan. These statements constitute dangerous stigmatization and collective discrimination aimed at delegitimizing the legitimate claims of a Congolese community by portraying it as foreign.
It is precisely against this policy of targeting and harassment that we organized our peaceful march in Washington, D.C. Mr. Mbikayi claims there is confusion between Rwandans and Banyamulenge. There is no confusion. What exists is a long-standing pattern of denial, discrimination, and dehumanization of the Banyamulenge people in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Even more alarming is his assertion that the Banyamulenge are “the most privileged.” We ask: what privilege is he referring to?
1. Is it the thousands of Banyamulenge who have been killed over decades simply because of who they are?
2. Is it the more than 450 Banyamulenge villages burned to the ground?
3 Is it the over 500,000 Banyamulenge livestock stolen, destroying entire livelihoods?
4. Is it the hospitals and schools that have been reduced to rubble?
5. Is it the civilians, men, women, and even soldiers, killed, burned, and subjected to unspeakable brutality including cannibalism?
6. Is it the Banyamulenge churches that have been desecrated and destroyed?
7. Is this what Mr. Mbikayi calls “privilege”?
We call it what it is: genocide.

Mr. Mbikayi’s claim that President Tshisekedi was the first to recognize the Banyamulenge as Congolese citizens is equally false and deeply troubling. The Banyamulenge are indigenous to the DRC, their ancestors were born, lived, and are buried there. Their citizenship is enshrined in the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Congo long before the current administration. Their identity is not a political concession, it is an inherent and constitutional right

We regret that the government in Kinshasa continues, through its representatives, to instrumentalize this discriminatory rhetoric in an attempt to discredit our actions.
We call on the U.S. senators and members of Congress whom Mr. Mbikayi plans to meet including @RepJoeWilson to be misled by such conflations, and instead to prioritize constructive dialogue based on facts.
We respectfully call on Mr. Marius Muhunga (@MariusMuhunga) to grant Mahoro Peace Association a right of reply in order to restore the truth and present our perspective.

Personne ne s’attendait à une telle beauté, une telle discipline, une telle puissance tranquille.

Nous n’avons pas besoin de hurler pour être entendus.

Notre nombre, notre dignité et notre amour pour la vie parlent plus fort que toutes les armes.

Dear François Nzanga Mobutu, Good evening. I bet your father is turning in his grave, writhing in pain and shame after reading your tweet. He, at least, knew that there are authentic and fully-fledged Congolese Tutsis. He proved it until people like you and others came along and misled him.

Do I need to inform you, in case you're unaware, that the people who demonstrated yesterday in Washington DC, roughly 4,000 of them, others the same day in Nairobi, and still others in England shortly before, are Banyamulenge, these Congolese Tutsis from the highlands, who are protesting against what Tshisekedi and the FARDC, the Wazalendo, Évariste Ndayishimiye and the FDNB, as well as the FDLR and mercenaries, are doing to their relatives in Minembwe and throughout the highlands? Their Sukhoi fighter jets and drones bomb daily, killing children, women, the elderly, and men. They destroy homes, churches, schools, hospitals, and community radio stations. They even kill cows and sheep and destroy fields and crops. They have imposed a blockade on Minembwe, with no entry or exit. They have done and are doing the same thing to the Tutsi in Masisi and Rutshuru in North Kivu.

Instead of listening to their cries and examining their demands, the excuse is quickly found; the preferred shortcut is Rwanda. Always and only Rwanda. Too easy, isn't it? Your thinking, which is also the regime's narrative, can be summarized in these two sentences:
- all the problems facing the DRC come from elsewhere, particularly from Rwanda; we will end up being told that even the migrants are here because of Rwanda. “And all the solutions must come from elsewhere, especially from the United States of America, from Papa Trump.” Under these conditions, what is the point of the regime you serve?

Two small truths to remember, dear François:

“Such an attitude, this kind of ideology, this denial of nationality to Congolese Tutsis of origin, from North and South Kivu, as well as to all those who are victims of the same persecution, like the Hema and others, this easy rejection based on appearance (racial profiling), are among the root causes of the crisis the country is going through;”

“As long as we haven’t decided to be sufficiently responsible, to sit down as a nation and rigorously assess our share (of responsibility) in what is happening to us, we will continue to wait for solutions from others, solutions that may never come.”

Furthermore, there are satanic verses that must be banished immediately, in the interest of everyone and the country, such as: "There are no Congolese Tutsis, every Tutsi is Rwandan, therefore a foreigner," etc. Either we will be able to put an end to exclusion, discrimination, hate speech, and ethnic hatred, and live together according to the law and history, or this deep-seated problem risks haunting us for a long time. But to achieve this, we need leadership capable of understanding and transcending differences and turning them into assets for living together. This is possible.

You are associating refugee status with race. Would a crowd of white Ukrainians in the United States automatically be perceived as refugees? Or Germans and Irish immigrants who settled in the US?

These protesters, beyond being Black, may in fact be descendants of migrants—just as many Americans are, including those of Irish or German origin. Some may hold green cards and were never refugees. Others may have arrived through family reunification, which is unrelated to refugee status. Some may have initially come as high skilled migrants (not refugees). And many would have become US citizens, meaning they are no longer refugees.

Refugee status is temporary—it reflects a specific circumstance, not a permanent identity. It is similar to being unemployed: once a person finds employment, they are no longer defined by that status. Likewise, someone who was once homeless is no longer homeless once they have stable housing.

Once an individual becomes a US citizen, they are, above all, a patriot; the notion of “gratitude” for citizenship is not necessarily relevant—just as one would not typically frame belonging to a family in terms of gratitude. These individuals are Americans like you, and their actions should be understood within that context.

Protesting for human rights is a fundamental right of all citizens, much like the protests led by both Black and white Americans against police brutality. It is an essential part of democratic participation.

It is therefore important to approach this issue with care and awareness, avoiding assumptions that may come across as uninformed or dismissive.

Blocking the roads, leave the issue to the police. Don't take the law in your own hands. They did seek permission. Police has not reported a single issue.

Votre pensée qui est du reste le narratif du régime peut être résumée en ces deux phrases :
- tous les problèmes que connaît la RDC viennent d’ailleurs, notamment du Rwanda; on finira par nous dire que même les migrants sont là à cause du Rwanda.
- Et toutes les solutions doivent venir d’ailleurs, notamment des États Unis d’Amérique, de Papa Trump.
Dans ces conditions, à quoi sert le régime au service du quel vous êtes ?

Deux petites vérités à retenir cher François:
- Pareille attitude, ce genre d’idéologie, ce déni de nationalité aux tutsis congolais d’origine, du Nord et du Sud Kivu ainsi que de tous ceux qui sont victimes de la même persécution comme les Hema et autres, ce rejet facile pour des raisons de faciès (crime de faciès), font partie des causes profondes de la crise que traverse le pays;
- Tant qu’on n’aura pas décidé d’être suffisamment responsables, de nous asseoir comme Nation et évaluer avec rigueur quelle est notre part ( de responsabilité) dans ce qui nous arrive, nous allons continuer à attendre des solutions des autres, des solutions qui risquent de ne jamais venir.

Par ailleurs, il est des versets sataniques qu’il faut bannir tout de suite, dans l’intérêt de tous et du pays, tels que : « il n’existe pas des tutsis congolais, tout tutsi est rwandais donc étranger » ect. Soit nous allons pouvoir mettre un terme à l’ exclusion, à la discrimination, au discours de haine, à la haine ethnique et vivre ensemble selon la loi et l’histoire ou alors cette cause profonde risque de nous poursuivre pour longtemps. Mais, pour y parvenir, il faut un leadership capable de comprendre et transcender les différences et en faire des atouts pour le vivre ensemble . C’est possible .

Voir des Banyamulenge se lever par milliers, jusque dans la diaspora aux États-Unis, rappelle qu'on n'ébranle pas un peuple qui a décidé de tenir debout. Ces mobilisations d'hier montrent une communauté organisée, résiliente et déterminée à faire entendre ses revendications de sécurité, de dignité et de pleine citoyenneté.

Qu'on les aime ou non, qu'on partage ou non toutes leurs lectures, les Banyamulenge sont Congolais, et ils vivront avec nous dans ce pays au même titre que toutes les autres composantes de la nation. On ne construira pas le Congo en niant l'existence de certains de ses enfants. On le construira en protégeant chaque communauté et en réapprenant le vivre-ensemble.

Ce peuple a traversé les soupçons, les violences, les campagnes de stigmatisation et les tentatives d'effacement. Pourtant, il est encore là, debout, organisé et résolu. Et c'est précisément cela, la force d'un peuple : survivre à l'injustice sans renoncer à son droit d'exister.

Le temps est venu de sortir des réflexes de haine, des procès identitaires et des exclusions sans fin. Le Congo a besoin de justice et d'un pacte national fondé sur l'égalité de tous. Notre avenir commun ne se bâtira ni dans la négation, ni dans l'humiliation de l'autre, mais dans l'acceptation de notre diversité.
