It was the voice that announced freedom and the golden jubilee of freedom as well. The booming voice announcing “Seydigal Vaasipadhu Venkataraman” was synonymous with ‘News’ in many Tamil households in Delhi and other parts of the world.

Octogenarian R S Venkataraman recalls, “I remember listening to Nehru’s midnight speech and translating it en route to the radio station and then it was aired...I distinctly recall August 15, 1997. I had retired from service by that time and was reading news as a casual assignee twice or thrice a week. My shift happened to be on August 15, 1997 and I read the news that day as well.
