Crypto APAC GTM Playbook: Navigating the Asian Landscape
APAC (Asia Pacific) is a diverse and complex region, with each country characterised by its own language (sometimes overlapping), culture, and social norms. Navigating the landscape requires local knowledge, cultural sensitivity, and tailored localisation strategies.
From China's stringent bans to the more established regulatory frameworks in Japan and Singapore, success in the APAC region hinges on embracing local culture and communication platforms like WeChat and Line.
Strategic partnerships with key regional KOLs and grassroots communities are essential to authentically amplify the project’s vision and foster better engagement through local media and events.
This guide breaks down APAC into key regions, starting with a write-up of each market and strategies including media outlets, KOLs, VCs, and key events.

Despite regulatory challenges and clampdowns, China remains influential in the crypto space through offshore activities.
This is because China is where the money is at —> most of the whales and retailers here are very degen and crypto native. Highly sought after market for both trading volume, TVL and user metrics.
To maximise exposure, partner with a Chinese media to maximise exposure and work with good KOLs to amplify upcoming catalysts. Most if not all of the media outlets require payment in USD. Partnering with the likes of OKX and Binance wallet is good for retail exposure and cross-marketing.
Also can opt to make use of Binance Square(social networking content platform) together with KOLs to amplify project updates and news.
In China, people use a combination of Twitter, WeChat, Weibo, Telegram and Discord for communication and private crypto (trading) groups to share alpha and the latest projects. Keep in mind that most sites are still banned by the Chinese government, so users will need to use VPN.
Users rely heavily on Chinese KOL and content creators for information, and read news portals to stay up to date with the latest news.
Consumer dApps may want to explore marketing on other Chinese social media (apart from WeChat) such as Douyin (Chinese TikTok) and Xiaohongshu (lifestyle focused app).
Chinese users are very PVP and highly speculative (fomo) because of the finance-driven culture, making money is the ultimate goal. Strong preference for memes and DeFi ponzi to ensure wealth effect. They are usually quite fast to things (BRC-20, ordinals, memes, bitcoin + eth).
Most of the biggest CEXes in the industry are from China, they care a lot about metrics (revenue, on-chain volume, user growth) + bringing in new users (user adoption) before considering a listing. All require some sort of payment (tokens or stables) to list.
With CEXs wallets becoming more popular, a popular strategy is also to partner with Web3 wallets (Binance, OKX, Bitget wallet) to increase mindshare and leverage it as targeted user acquisition.

Low salaries + combination of historical circumstances, cultural values and economic policies forces many to be business owners/ entrepreneurs in Malaysia and this could be the reason why we see many Malaysian founders of successful projects.
Malaysia is a multicultural population (Malay, Chinese and Indian) with an ever-growing tech adoption, and emerging fintech ecosystem with government support. Regulations on crypto are not as ironed out as its neighbour Singapore but the government has been exploring policy for crypto, blockchain tech in recent times.
Retail investors turn to crypto to make extra income/trade to financial independence and rely on social media for news. Use short, engaging content (e.g., TikTok explainers) and easy to understand campaigns in both Malay and English. (Mobile) gaming is also very popular in Malaysia evidenced by the popularity of P2E games like @AxieInfinity back in 2021. “Crypto-to-cash” solutions via e-wallets or gift cards are also popular as well (also represents a form of off-ramping).
Optimise for mobile (e.g., lightweight apps, simple messaging) and integrate with WhatsApp/ Facebook for announcements.
Since Malaysia is an Islamic country, Islamic investors need Sharia-compliant investments and solutions.

We receive hundreds of applications per month from various teams from all ecosystems looking to fundraise, but we turn down 95% of them.
Why?
There's a few reasons: (a) we don't believe in the team/project, (b) we don't feel like they are sustainable in the long-term, (c) their tokenomics or valuation just doesn't make sense when you benchmark it across others protocols in their sector, (d) we wouldn't buy into it ourselves, etc.
I strongly believe that this is what really makes us stand out - as noted in my declaration (https://t.co/JJGD82UT7O) - we do not charge a fee for curation so we judge and support a protocol based on merit.
You gotta impress us - marginal improvements to the backend infrastructure and wrapping it under a new UI/UX isn't gunna fly.

In the last 12 months, we've supported a lot of promising protocols in fundraising, or marketing initiatives - I'll note a few, and the rationale as to why we chose them.
@GammaSwapLabs, spearheaded by gigachad @0xDeFiDevin - they've innovated a solution to turn impermanent loss on LP'ing into impermanent gain. They're also developing a new DeFi primitive that is set to roll out soon, it's big brained by @chutoro_au said its bullish - so, it's bullish.
@avalonfinance_ is building a BTC-backed stablecoin, enabling you to borrow against your $BTC at a fixed rate of 8% per year. If you're a BTC bull - this is a no brainer. You don't pay taxes on borrowed funds, you can borrow against your BTC to spend IRL and allow $BTC's continued upward trajectory pay off your loan.
@Contango_xyz have built a looping layer, enabling you to lever up on point or yield farming in a few clicks through their integrations with various money markets. Kamel is bald, so that's another bull signal.
@asymmetryfin are pioneering a two new stablecoins, with the support of giants like @AmpleforthOrg and @Fidelity. Only the governance token is live at the moment, but when the stablecoin eventually rolls out - the world will pay attention. @hannahjojo_ has showcased exceptional traits of a strong leader.
@puffpaw is putting xxx-to-earn meta, back on the map. This sector has always been interesting to me but it was unsustainable because of (a) compounding inflation, and (b) incentivising a non-natural behaviour - no one will sit there 24/7 and play your pixelated game when there's Final Fantasy, God of Ragnarok, League of Legends available. Puffpaw have solved for (a) and (b) - they're @berachain aligned, and most importantly - they have a very clear strategy in onboarding real consumers, not just degenerate farmers.
@StableJack_xyz reminds me of @pendle_fi in the early days - it takes a while to grasp, but once you get the "aha" moment - you realize how bullish it really is. I initially thought of Stable Jack as a Pendle competitor, but after reading this (https://t.co/N9a4h2Synt) I realise that they can be synergistic. Shoutout to @hushky6 for the connect here.
@beraborrow is the 3rd largest CDP in the world, printed millions in fees, and a central part of the Berachain ecosystem - all done without a token. Tell you me you found PMF without tellin' me. $POLLEN will take their flywheel to the next level. Bera szn is just getting warmed up.

tl;dr - whilst our rejection rate is incredibly high, we are always happy to back projects and founders that are building something that's +EV for the space.
