Today, our greatest concern is the uncertain whereabouts of @ImranKhanPTI , reportedly held in illegal isolation for over 3 weeks with no access to family or legal counsel.

Across social media & among independent observers, there are serious fears & allegations regarding Army Chief Asim Munir’s increasingly authoritarian conduct, especially in light of the massacre reported in Islamabad on November 26 of last year. Many worry that the sweeping power he now wields with broad immunity & total impunity following the 27th Amendment to the constitution could enable him to eliminate political workers. These concerns are deeply rooted in Pakistan’s long & well-documented history of military overreach.

Imran Khan, the heartbeat of the Pakistani nation, may be in grave danger.

PAKISTAN: The recent arrests of Shershah Khan and Shahrez Khan, nephews of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in cases relating to the 9 May (2023) protests, are part of political witch-hunt aimed at intimidating the family members of political opponents. Amnesty International calls on Pakistani authorities to immediately release Shershah Khan and Shahrez Khan.

Their arrest is part of a larger pattern of politically motivated targeting and detention against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to crush political opposition and muzzle dissent in the country. Targeting family members of opposition leaders and activists by the government is becoming an increasingly common practice in Pakistan and must stop.

Pakistani Americans supported @realDonaldTrump in the last elections, but meetings with Munir send the wrong message: that the US is backing dictatorship over democracy. All engagement with a dangerous dictator must stop until true democracy is restored in Pakistan!

For the first time in U.S. history, concerns over transnational repression targeting Pakistani Americans are being raised at the county level. The Loudoun County Republican Committee, one of the strongest GOP units in one of America’s most affluent counties, with a median household income of $178,000 has voiced serious concerns about repression by Pakistani generals.

Loudoun County includes Washington D.C.’s international airport & is home to President Trump’s golf course, where he frequently visits. Thanks to the persistent grassroots efforts of the Pakistani diaspora, issues of national significance are now gaining traction at the county level among Republicans.
