The Permanent Secretary of the @MinofHealthUG, @DianaAtwine, has officially launched the Hydroxyurea manufacturing plant and Sikurea Hydroxyurea 500mg by Quality Chemical Industries Limited (QCIL) in Luzira — a landmark milestone in Uganda’s fight against Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).
Dr Atwine emphasized that SCD contributes to nearly 20% of infant mortality in Uganda, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable access to life-saving treatment and early interventions. She reaffirmed Government’s unwavering commitment to combating Sickle Cell Disease through strengthened local pharmaceutical manufacturing, improved access to treatment, and strategic partnerships with the private sector.
The Government of Uganda will continue to work closely with @qcil_uganda2 to ensure the availability and affordability of critical sickle cell therapies, including Hydroxyurea, for patients across the country. The Permanent Secretary further noted that all sickle cell commodities will be integrated among Uganda’s essential medicines, reinforcing Government’s commitment to equitable access and long-term care for affected communities.
Dr Atwine also called upon the public to embrace premarital genetic counseling and support nationwide newborn screening initiatives aimed at early diagnosis and intervention. She commended the ongoing support from the Consortium on Newborn Screening for Sickle Cell Disease in Africa (CONSA), whose partnership continues to strengthen Uganda’s efforts in reducing the burden of the disease.
Today’s launch represents a major step forward in advancing local solutions, improving patient outcomes, and building a healthier future for Uganda.

House has adopted the motion urging government to recognise the sickle cell disease as a major public health concern that requires immediate budgetary attention.
Government Chief Whip, hon. @ObuaHamson said the issue of sickle cell disease is being integrated within the national health system by @MinofHealthUG.
