Since yesterday, some powerful voices in India—led by none other than the RSS Secretary General—have expressed a desire for a change in policy toward Pakistan. This is interesting as well as a welcome change of heart, and Pakistan should welcome this sentiment. If the USA and China can develop a close economic relationship, why not Pakistan and India? The mere start of talks between Pakistan and India would transform the economic prospects of both countries and also help curb extremism. Both Hindutva and Muslim extremists would grow weaker as a result of such developments. Therefore, it is in the interest of the billions of people of the subcontinent that the leadership of both countries show a willingness to talk to each other.
In Pakistan, there is a wider consensus on normalization with India. The problem lies on the Indian side. If the RSS leadership leads this initiative, it would be a major shift—and a positive one.
